Most offices have a breakroom or common lounge area. Having comfortable and inviting break areas can actually increase employee productivity. Ensure that your office breakroom is safe and enjoyable.

Make it easy, fast and clean to dine in the breakroom. Get inexpensive kitchen appliances for the breakroom, like a coffee maker, toaster and microwave. Clean-up is simple when you provide paper and disposable products like plates, cups and silverware. It doesn’t hurt to have some beverages and snacks on hand in the breakroom either. Encourage employees to bring in their own snacks, or buy some snacks in bulk at wholesale prices.

You can make a breakroom more relaxing with comfortable seating and fans if needed. Small portable fans are an easy and inexpensive option for common areas. Be sure your breakroom is safe as well. Place mats and anti-slip tape in necessary places. Also have “caution” and “wet floor” signs in an accessible place in case of spills. Make sure there is also a first aid kit in the breakroom, and that employees know where to find it.

Create an open communication space in the breakroom. By having a bulletin board or magnetic dry erase board, employees can communicate with each other, and receive notices and  news from the company. This area is also a great spot for a company suggestion box.

When you have a comfortable and convenient breakroom, employees will be inspired to enjoy their company and improve their work.
