In the dark, when a beam of light is directed at the stripes, light bounces back toward the source for enhanced nighttime visibility.

I was disappointed in that the tape barely reflects any light. I bought the tape to put on a chain that is across my driveway. When the car lights hit the tape, nothing really reflects to draw attention to the tape.
